Samsung Galaxy X: The latest on Samsung's foldable phone
Samsung keeps its engine running by producing trendy styles
and displays like Edge, but it’s been circulating that its newest project
Galaxy X (believed to be a part of Project Valley) will highlight a foldable
display.
Apparently, this smartphone will have hinged second OLED
panels that might ditch the bezels to achieve a full-screen look. This phone
turns into a tablet with a 7-inch display when not folded.
Digital Trends also reported that the official version might
be launched at the Mobile World Congress in February 2018. However, a similar
report said that the release is on 2019 due to Samsung’s desire to see an
efficient performance first. Samsung is also planning on releasing two models,
in which one has a 5-inch screen, but turns into an 8-inch display when it is
rolled out.
The Korean Times also spoke to Park Hyung-woo, an analyst at
Shinhan Financial in South Korea, who said the smartphone is set to launch next
year. This corroborates past reports from The Investor that Samsung was
prepping the Galaxy X for production and eventual release in late 2018 or early
2019.

DESIGN
The most recent report comes from the Korean Times who spoke
to Park Hyung-woo, an analyst at Shinhan Financial in South Korea. Park
believes the Galaxy X will have two inside panels forming the 7.3-inch screen
when the phone is unfolded, along with one outside panel to use when it’s
folded.
According to Korean news site The Bell, the final design for
the Galaxy X foldable smartphone has been tentatively confirmed. In a surprise
to absolutely no one, the Galaxy X will apparently be using OLED panels in its
construction — but what is notable is the number of them. According to The Bell’s
report, the Galaxy X will feature three 3.5-inch OLED panels: two that form a
massive 7-inch screen when unfolded, and one on the rear of the device that
allows for the phone to be used when folded.
Samsung Galaxy X: Features
Whilst the Galaxy X wasn’t launched per se at MWC 2018, word
on the street was that selected press and partners were permitted a sneaky peak
of the device. All very hush-hush, of course.
Nonetheless, rumours began circulating shortly thereafter,
with a Super AMOLED display with flexible capabilities expected to be the
Galaxy X’s defining feature. Further details suggested that the Galaxy X will
offer a 5in display that can be folded outwards, transforming the smartphone
into a 7in miniature tablet.
All this makes us reminiscent of the days of 2010 when
critics snubbed Samsung’s original Galaxy Note, deeming its 5.3in screen too
big. Fast-forward a few years and you’ll see that big, beautiful screens are a
spec du jour. A 5.3in screen might even seem paltry to some, with the ill-fated
Note 7 sporting a monstrous 5.7in display. The extendable/contractible feature
on the Galaxy X might just broaden Samsung’s audience appeal: from the clammy
grasper favouring an easy-to-hold phone, to the wide-eyed tablet enthusiast,
it’s got dimensions for everyone, and they’re adaptable to boot.
